Pakistan Environmental Protection Act 1997


The history of the development of Environmental legislation started with the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 5–16 in 1972. The meeting agreed upon a Declaration (now known as Stockholm Declaration) containing 26 principles concerning the environment and development, an Action Plan with 109 recommendations, and a Resolution.

This led to the establisment of Federal Environment Ministry in 1975 which was responsible for setting the direction of environmental conservation and promulgation of environmental legistlation. The First legislation in the form of Presidential Environmental Ordinance was passed in 1980/ 1982.

Pakistan's National Conservation Strategy was developed by IUCN and accepted as a guiding principle to set the future course of environmental legislation.

Subsequently Pakistan Environmental Protection Act was enacted on 6th December 1997 which served as a major milestone for environmental legislation until 2010.

The 18th Consititutional Amendement Act of 2010 led to the delegation of the subject of environment to each province and therefore empowered them provinces to draft their own environmental legislation.



Sindh Environmental Protection Act-2014


The Sindh Environmental Protection bill, 2014 having been passed by the Provincial Assembly of Sindh on 24th February, 2014 was assented to by the Governor of Sindh on 19th March, 2014 and published as an Act of the Legislature of Sindh.

Sindh Environmental Protection Act-2014, provides for the protection, conservation, rehabilitation and improvement of the environment, for the prevention and control of pollution, and promotion of sustainable development.
